Pattern of exam

The 90-minute written test carries 100 marks. The objective-type exam has questions in abstract reasoning, verbal reasoning, reading comprehension, numerical reasoning and general knowledge.

Candidates will have to score at least 45 per cent to qualify the written test. Those shortlisted will then have to appear for a group discussion (50 marks) and a personal interview (100marks). Applicants are assessed at the personal interview on the following five criteria: communication skills, alertness and analytical skills, general awareness, warmth and service orientation, and personality.

How to prepare

To prepare for the section on abstract reasoning, some of the books you can consult are Analytical Reasoning by Pandey, Verbal and Nonverbal Reasoning by R.S. Agarwal, Test of Reasoning by Edgar Thorpe and books on the subject by CSR Publications or Bookhives.

Brush up your verbal reasoning from books such as English is Easy by Magic Publications, Objective English by Tata McGraw Hill publishers, 30 days to Word Power by Norman Lewis and All about Words by Nurenberg.
The aim of the interview is to assess your knowledge and depth of understanding, presence of mind, analytical skills, communication skills, confidence and composure. Successful conversation demands clear thinking, expressed in concise and grammatically correct language, which must convey facts in an easily understandable and interesting manner. Keep a cool head and you should be able to ace it.

JIPMER traces its origin to 1823 when a medical school called the Ecole de Medicine de Pondicherry was established by the French government in the Indian colony governed by it. In 1956 the government of India took over the medical college along with the rest of Puducherry. The college was upgraded and named the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) in 1964. It is under the administrative control of the directorate general of health services (DGHS), the Union ministry of health and family welfare.

JIPMER has 28 academic departments imparting graduate and postgraduate education in the different disciplines of medicine as well as a hospital and nursing home that provide free medical care to the poor. Affiliated to Pondicherry University, the institute’s different departments carry out research in various fields of modern medicine and health and medical education.

The JIPMER campus is located on the highway to Puducherry and is spread over 195 acres. The campus is like a small, self-sufficient town and houses its own post office, bank and shopping centre apart from hostels for the students and a residential complex for the staff.

Apart from the MBBS course, JIPMER also offers a BSc in medical laboratory technology, a bachelor of medical record science, an MSc in medical biochemistry as well as MD, MS and PhD programmes. There are also some super-speciality and certificate courses.

The notification for the entrance examination is published in all leading newspapers and on the website in January or February. To get the form by post, send a written request to the registrar (academic), Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Dhanvantrinagar, Puducherry-605006 along with a demand draft worth Rs 500, drawn in favour of the accounts officer, JIPMER and payable at Puducherry Union Territory. You can also download the form and submit it online (www.jipmer.edu).

NSNIS, which is Asia’s largest sports institute, is housed in the palatial building and sprawling grounds belonging to the erstwhile Maharaja of Patiala whose descendants dedicated this complex to the promotion of sports. The institute has produced coaches who have made significant contributions in preparing the national teams for international competitions.

The institute also houses one of the centres of excellence set up in October 2000 by SAI to groom budding sportspersons. This centre operates as a coaching camp for the best available talent in India. It also conducts outreach camps in remote areas, with the help of the district administration and local nongovernmental organisations. NSNIS also has an integrated school (up to Class V), approved by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, for orthopaedically disabled children.

NSNIS offers an MSc in sports coaching, a postgraduate diploma in sports medicine as well as a diploma and a certificate in sports coaching. Scholarships are also given to deserving candidates.

The Faculty of Sports Sciences, with multiple disciplines (sports medicine, exercise physiology, biochemistry, physiotherapy, sports anthropometry, biomechanics, kinesiology, training methods, sports psychology and research methodology) was established in 1983. Besides offering a gamut of courses, the faculty provides scientific knowhow to sportspersons who attend national camps.

Over the years, NSNIS set up centres at Bangalore, Calcutta and Gandhinagar. About 14,000 coaches, including 507 foreigners, have graduated from the four academic centres, so far. The diploma in sports coaching course is now conducted at Patiala, Bangalore and Calcutta.

The notifications are generally advertised in March or April. The forms can be obtained from the Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports, Old Moti Bagh, Patiala, Punjab, by sending a demand draft of Rs 150. For details, log on to www.nsnis.org.
