The Institute of Law was set up in 2007 by Nirma University of Science and Technology, which is recognised by the University Grants Commission. It was established in response to the demand for innovative legal education.
The institute pays equal importance to academic excellence and practical application of legal knowledge. With this end in view, it has included an internship / placement programme during vacations with non-government organisations (NGOs), advocates and judges of trial courts, high courts and the Supreme Court as well as law firms.
As part of the hands-on approach, the institute encourages students from first year onwards to take part in various national and international moot court competitions. The institute arranges expert lectures on moot courts and mooting skills to inspire interest. Intra-class moot court competitions are also held to give students in-house training. The institute has a special moot court hall equipped with modern amenities.
Students of the institute have participated in the 11th M.M. Sanghvai Memorial International Law Moot Court Competition at National Law University, Jodhpur, Corporate Law Moot Court Competition at the Army Institute of Law, Mohali, and the 7th Amity National Moot Court Competition at Amity Law School in Delhi.
The Institute of Law offers a five-year integrated BA LLB (hons) programme. The curriculum focuses on the historical, political and social perspectives of development of law, which gives students an insight into the subject. The institute also aspires to impart practical training to students.
The admission notification is published in all leading newspapers in April. Interested candidates should send a demand draft of Rs 1,000 in favour of the Institute of Law, payable at Ahmedabad, to the Nirma University of Science & Technology, Sarkhej-Gandhinagar Highway, PO Chandlodia, via Gota, Ahmedabad-382481. Eligibility
Candidates should have passed Plus Two or an equivalent examination in any stream under the Gujarat State Education Board, or any other examining body, with a minimum of 50 per cent in aggregate and with English as one of the subjects. Applicants should not be more than 21 years old as on June 30 of the year of admission.
Entrance exam
Nirma University conducts an all-India entrance test in the first week of June at centres in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Delhi, Indore, Jaipur, Mumbai, Rajkot, Surat and Vadodara. For admission, performance in this test is given 75 per cent weightage while 25 per cent weightage is given to marks obtained in the qualifying examination.
Pattern of exam
The 200-mark entrance test has both descriptive and objective-type questions. The descriptive section carries 40 marks while the objective-type questions carry 160 marks. The duration of the test is two and a half hours and there is no negative marking.
The descriptive test evaluates a candidate’s problem solving ability in the legal field. The syllabus for the objective-type test includes significant legal events and developments; current events of national and international importance; general science; history of India; geography and Indian polity and economy.
Candidates are invited for counselling based on the merit list, which is published in the third week of June on the website.

Read magazines such as Competition Success Review, Civil Services Chronicle and Banking Services Chronicle for law-related news. You must read the newspaper daily and make a note of important national and international events.
Go through the general knowledge guide book by Pearson, the Spectrum series on GK, the CSR Yearbook and the Manorama Yearbook to crack the questions on science, history, geography, economy and Indian polity.
