MBBS, Lady Hardinge Medical College, Delhi
The Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC), Delhi, was established in 1914. It has been named after the then viceroy’s wife, Lady Hardinge, who laid the foundation to commemorate the visit of Queen Mary, wife of George V and mother of the present Queen of England, in 1911-12. The college and hospital was formally inaugurated by Lord Hardinge in February 1916.
Initially, the college took in only women and its first batch consisted of 16 students. The popularity of the college grew considerably and, in 1970, Lady Hardinge Medical College threw open its doors to male students. The college, which was formerly affiliated to the Punjab University, came under the aegis of the University of Delhi in 1950.
Since its inception, LHMC has focused on providing quality education to students. The duration of the MBBS course is five and a half years, including a one-year internship. The curriculum has been designed as per Medical Council of India (MCI) regulations.
Ranked as one of the five top medical colleges in the country, LHMC boasts independent India’s first health minister Dr Sushila Nair and AIIMS dean Dr Sneha Bhargav as alumni.
Apart from the MBBS course, LHMC offers a diploma in nursing for women candidates, an MD in medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, anaesthesia, dermatology, radiodiagnosis and imaging, community medicine, pathology, physiology, pharmacology, microbiology, medical biochemistry, forensic medicine and psychiatry, an MS in surgery, orthopaedics, ENT, ophthalmology and anatomy as well as diploma courses such as DA, DO, DLO, DGO, DCH and DMRD.
The bulletin and application form for the Delhi University Medical Entrance Test (Dumet) can be obtained by post from the office of the assistant registrar, Faculty of Medical Sciences, sixth floor, V.P. Chest Institute Building, University of Delhi, Delhi-110007. Send a bank draft or banker’s cheque of Rs 600 — drawn on any nationalised bank — in favour of the registrar, University of Delhi (payable at Delhi) and a self-addressed envelope (10” x 8”) along with the request. The application form can also be obtained by hand on payment of Rs 550 at the Lady Hardinge Medical College. Application deadline is usually in the first week of April in the year of admission.
Eligibility
Candidates should have completed Plus Two with physics, chemistry, biology and English with 50 per cent marks in each subject. He or she should have passed out from a recognised school conducting regular classes that is situated within the national capital region of Delhi.
Entrance exam
Aspirants have to appear for Dumet, which is usually held in the third week of May.
Pattern of exam
The first paper has questions in physics and chemistry while the second paper tests a student’s knowledge in zoology and botany. Both the papers are of 600 marks each. The duration of each paper is two and half hours and the questions are of multiple-choice type.
