If your dearest wish is to invent the tastiest icecream, this is where you’ll find the recipe. Institute of Career Studies lends a hand.
The National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) at Karnal, Haryana, is a premier organisation that provides research support for dairy development programmes of the nation. The institute, which became a deemed university in March 1989, has gained prominence as a front ranking research organisation in the world.
NDRI provides high quality education, developing manpower for multiple levels in the dairy industry. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has also tied-up with the Centre of Advanced Studies at NDRI to further strengthen the research in dairy cattle breeding and dairy technology at the institute.
There are ten subheads — namely dairy cattle breeding, dairy cattle nutrition, dairy cattle physiology, dairy chemistry, dairy engineering, dairy microbiology, dairy technology, animal biochemistry, dairy economics, statistics and management, and dairy extension — under which teaching and research is conducted at the university.
The institute at Karnal is located on 560 hectares of land, of which 360 hectares is used for fodder cultivation. The beautiful campus also houses the central administrative office, various research divisions, the National Library in Dairying, the cattle yard, the embryo biotechnology centre, the artificial breeding complex, farm and maintenance sections. It also houses the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, the trainers’ training centre, the computer centre, the dairy plant, the milk parlour, a health complex, guest house, community centre, printing press, museum, accommodation for staff and student hostels.
The institute offers various programmes at the diploma, graduate, postgraduate and doctorate levels. The BTech (dairy technology) programme offers intensive training in processing of milk and its products, quality control and the engineering aspects of dairy processing equipment. Students spend a year of the four-year course in practical training at the model dairy plant located on the institute’s premises.
NDRI also offers masters degree programmes in dairy microbiology, dairy chemistry, dairy technology, dairy engineering, animal biochemistry, animal biotechnology, animal genetics and breeding, livestock production and management, animal nutrition, animal physiology, dairy economics and dairy extension education. The institute also offers doctoral programmes as well as various farmer oriented activities and training programmes related to animal husbandry and dairy technology.
The AIEEA application form can be purchased by paying Rs 400 (plus Rs 25 handling charges) from the registrars of the 38 agricultural universities as well as Syndicate Bank branches.
